I would like to remind folx that all publicity ain’t good publicity.
The article written by Ursula Brantley is a necessary one. Please take the time to read it.
But we continue to avoid the ongoing harm caused by Afropunk that is now owned corporately by vanilla ice thrice.
The harm that has come from Afropunk alone towards the communities it claims to protect.
Afropunk is no longer aligned with any of the values of what it means to be Afrikan or Punk
Afropunk alone has caused hella harm including using the likeness and image of neurodivergent folx with no credit, no coin, nada. I am one of those persons.
I’ve never been to an Afropunk ever where neurodivergence was accommodated, and i’ve been to a few.
There’s no quiet rooms, or spaces where folx with hearing sensitivities can engage the event, no ear plugs or trendy loops given away for free.
There no discussion or tips on how to practice that performative “No List they” post at events.
I’ve experienced ableism, fatphobia, and transphobia and beyond all at Afropunk.
So this is false advertising. It’s a clout grab for more neurodivergent followers when they would do nada to accommodate you in offline space or in online space for that matter.
They want your attention, your distraction, and your coin.
We are in a super tender time when it come to neurodivergence and Black bodies and that needs to be taken with the utmost respect and care.
